SYNOPSIS:
Today, against a backdrop of sharply increasing demand, growth in the world population and the growing impact of an unsettled climate, water has become one of the most precious natural resources of our planet.

Faithful to Yann Arthus-Bertrand’s reputation, A THIRSTY WORLD, filmed in some 20 countries, reveals the mysterious and fascinating world of fresh water through spectacular aerial images shot in regions that are difficult to reach and rarely filmed, like Southern Sudan or Northern Congo. It also lets us discover the most beautiful landscapes on our planet, the lakes, rivers and wetlands created by water.

A THIRSTY WORLD attempts to bring together Yann Arthus-Bertrand’s trademark aerial view of the world with the harsh, everyday reality of all those people who are deprived of water and may even die for lack of it, the people engaged in the daily struggle to find water, purify it or bring it to those who need it.

The film is built up on a host of encounters. A shepherd from north Kenya looks us in the eye and says he has killed for water and would do so again. Women dance when water finally arrives in their village. An atypical United Nations ambassadress talks about her combat to make governments too commit to providing access to water and the most modern purification techniques to guarantee the survival and health of the poorest populations.

SYNOPSIS:
It’s a paradox. Never before have we worked more efficiently. Never before have we saved time with more sophisticated technologies. But nearly everyone feels they don’t have enough time.

Florian Opitz tries to track down the reasons for our lack of time and the constant acceleration of our lives. He reveals a disturbing picture of a civilisation that has disposed of all brake systems and goes blindly for unlimited and eternal growth – no matter what the consequences. But Opitz also tries to find the good life. In the niches of the global capitalism he discovers alternatives to the rat race.

Engels:
This tribute to the human imagination takes the form of an indictment of hierarchical education systems aimed at competition and quantifiable results. This documentary essay quotes education expert Sir Ken Robinson at the start: “I believe that we systematically destroy this capacity [for imagination] in our children and in ourselves.” The film identifies similar complaints from China to France. Yang Dongping, educational science professor at the Institute of Technology in Beijing, regrets the rise of market-thinking in the Chinese education system. “Today, everyone is sucked into a spiralling vortex of competition.” On the other side, German education expert Andreas Schleicher is in favor of the international standardization of student testing. His arguments are rebutted by German brain researcher Gerald Hüther, French creative educator Arno Stern – whose son André never attended school but ended up doing just fine as a guitar builder – and Pablo Pineda Ferrer, star of the 2009 feature Yo también and the first European student with Down syndrome to graduate from a university. In between the interviews, the documentary intersperses images of rigid and repetitive exteriors and interiors, and scenes of nature and children at play. In the end, they’re they’re the ones this is all about.

Nederlands:

Not since the invention of the Internet has there been such a disruptive technology as Bitcoin. Bitcoin’s early pioneers sought to blur the lines of sovereignty and the financial status quo. After years of underground development Bitcoin grabbed the attention of a curious public, and the ire of the regulators the technology had subverted. After landmark arrests of prominent cyber criminals Bitcoin faces its most severe adversary yet, the very banks it was built to destroy.
